The Academy Awards : A Formal Affair.

Posted in Uncategorized by modman on March 6, 2010

I dont like that evening gowns and dresses are automatically labeled as “red carpet looks”, even if they will be worn on the red carpet. Some designers base their collections largely on eveningwear and they are known to some as Hollywood sellouts. That perception is completely uncalled for. Who doesnt love to see beautiful art from the runway on real women with amazing talent? Thats exactly what The Academy Awards is all about, recognizing actors and actresses with a special gift of bringing a script to life.

Here are some amazing pieces that I spotted during New York Fashion Week last month. It used to be rare that actresses were able to get their hands on evening gowns straight off the runway but the industry has picked up the pace to meet the demand, especially if it means that the gown will hit the Oscar red carpet. Stylists like Rachel Zoe were probably at New York, London, Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks to do just that, pick out Oscar-worthy dresses.

Carlos Miele, Halston and Monique Lhuillier give shots of color into their collections. Carolina Herrera designed a gorgeous batch of gowns that have the signature classic Herrera look.

Reem Acra, Monique Lhuillier, Lela Rose and Victoria Beckham have designed off-the-shoulder looks that create lovely silhouettes. I cant wait to see what Victoria Beckham wears.

London Fashion Week.

Posted in fashion week., new york city. by modman on February 21, 2010

This past week has been quite the whirlwind.. some days were packed with shows to run to and I honestly dont know where the time went. My trip was only 10 days but I experienced so much in those 10 days. It feels like I was in New York City for more than a month.

Fashion editors, photographers, buyers, models, makeup and hair specialists who travel to and from one fashion week to another do more work than most people know. The travel itself is extremely draining and although it may seem like the ultimate dream (which it was/is for me), the work that goes on behind the scenes is exactly that.. unseen. London Fashion Week just started a few days ago (the 19th) and then Milan and Paris shows continue through to the second week of March. How insane.

My overall recap of my time at NYFW is coming soon.. Almost every blogger I know has already written about their experiences already but the schoolwork that I missed beckons. Im excited to go back and organize my thoughts on social media + fashion, trends on the runway, and some changes I was thinking about for modmen. Stay tuned!

MFW : Fall 2010 – Giorgio Armani

Posted in Uncategorized by modman on February 2, 2010

Since I started this blog, I’ve been telling myself that I need to train my eye to edit. In what way, you ask? Well.. when I first started looking through runway shows, I pretty much picked out every runway look and labeled it as my favorite. You can imagine how many “favorites” I had.. Since then, I have browsed through hundreds of runway photographs and have been able to prune my extensive “list of favorites” into a fairly small favorites collection of a runway collection.

The purpose of my posting Fall 2010 Menswear shows from Paris and Milan is not to show off or replicate gq.com, as anyone can access these same images. I think of my posts as an editing process; posting on modmen helps me see my train of thought. My goal has been to choose one look per collection.. a look that sums up the entire aesthetic and feeling of said collection. As you can see, I havent been doing so well with that. Either way, I am learning to spot trends, silhouettes, color palettes and other minor details that I didnt notice before. This reflective process has been a tremendous learning experience.. I hope this explains what may seem like random posts.

With that said, Giorgio Armani is a design giant. This Fall collection can be summed up in one word : sumptuous. While certain designers are sticking to basic pieces and timeless silhouettes and safe colors, Armani pushes recession limits with this collection. Pants and sports jackets made from velvet, thick coats, and the mixing and matching of patterned fabrics dominate the runway. Take a look for yourself:

And for the record, this collection was 94 looks. I’ve done as much editing as I could do! Time to go knock out.. I think the NyQuil is getting to me. I better  be better by this time next week! More on that later..

A total contrast from spring. But utilitarianism at its best.
