Look of the Day - 10.26.09 - Michael Bastian S08

Today was hot! Although it was “only” about 85 degrees, the heat was unexpected and caught people off guard. Its almost November..

I was browsing through gq.com today and came across this look from Michael Bastian, Spring 2008. Michael Bastian worked as the men’s fashion director at Bergdorf Goodman so he definitely knows about the market and whats missing. He started his own line because, “We were always talking about things we couldn’t find : chinos, the perfect skinny button-down, the perfect V-neck. All those classic American things that you feel are out there but really aren’t.”

The look of the Spring 2008 collection was the “weathered American man”. The shorts are a good length, the white shirt is a necessity (and can be buttoned up all the way, dont worry), the jacket is perfect for cool mornings and the look is finished with boat shoes and a brown belt that brings it all together. Although you may not see yourself wearing these pieces all at once like the look illustrates, each piece (shorts, shirt, jacket, shoes, belt) can be paired with other items to create a more toned-down look (shorts + white tshirt, white dress shirt with jeans, etc).

Take the hint (about the chinos, button down, and v-neck!), Michael Bastian has the street cred when it comes to knowing what guys want in their wardrobes. And again, don’t be scared off by the word skinny.
