My past purchases have taught me that investment pieces are just that, investments. There are many retailers for both guys and girls that are trend-driven and are quick to turn hot runway items or celebrity favorites into affordable goods. H&M, Forever21, and Charlotte Russe are examples of stores that have successfully established clothing lines of popular styles for less. Although the styles are trendy and affordable, it doesn’t necessarily mean that items from certain stores are worth it. Cheaper is good, but not when sacrificing quality in certain pieces of clothing.

Investment pieces are vital in creating a strong, lasting wardrobe. In both guys and girls, investments pieces include a dress-down style blazer (ie. girls boyfriend blazer), shoes (ie. girls : heels, flats, boots/guys : boots, dress shoes), jewelry (a watch, ring/bracelet/necklace for girls), bottoms (jeans, pants, slacks, cords, skirts for girls), tops (blouses/dress shirts, cardigans), dresses and outerwear (coats, jackets, etc.). Spending a bit more on such items (made of cashmere, wool and leather) will make a huge difference and will last longer than purchasing plastic boots at Forever21 for $40 (which will last for a painful month or two).

Some great retailers for investment pieces include Zara, Banana Republic, Club Monaco, Armani Exchange, Ben Sherman, Urban Outfitters and JCrew. Select H&M stores have dressier selections with improved quality. Nordstrom, Diesel and Calvin Klein also offer investment pieces for a bit more. And for your splurge purchase/s, Bloomingdales, Barneys, Saks, and Bergdorfs will definitely cater to your needs. But it always feels awesome to browse discount retailers like Marshalls, Loehmanns, and TJ Maxx and find some great pieces at bargain prices.

College is an opportunity to experiment with different styles and its smart to shop for trendy clothing at cheaper retailers. But college can also be a time to be smart and start building your wardrobe to last year for years to come. Remember, although it may seem nice to have a huge closet full of lots of trendy clothes, most of them will be out the next season. Remember to think before you buy!
